内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The Japan Team, in conjunction with United Nations University’s Sharing Traditional Technology (STT)Pr()ject, has undertaken to research pre・modern agricultural technology and to assess the contemporary significance and application possibilities of such technology. Two particular topics are addressed:1)The technology utilized in the Edo period(1603-1867)for land reclamation, and 2)An analysis of the agricultural technologies described in the various nosho 農書(farm manuals)published during and after this period. In short, the present report constitutes a study ofpre-modern agricultural technology. Generally speaking, the teml nosho re fe rs to farm manuals written and. published during the Edo period when agriculture was developed, and grew, into a viable and profitable occupation. (Even the earliest nosho are not more than 300 years old.) Pre-war Japanese agricultural technoIogies utilized for daily production purposes were essentially the same as those of the Edo period. Farm manuals thus contain inf()rmation pertinent to and representative of pre-World War 1 agricultura1 p・roductions, despite their emergence as a genre centuries earlier. Following WWII, the Japanese economy experienced a period of very high growth and relative prosperity;aperiod that also saw the rapid mechanization and industrialization of the nation. Accordingly, the farm manual genre reflects the radical alteration and innovations in the field of agriculture as well as in the structure of farming villages and the quality of village life. Farm manuals serve as an accessjble source of pirmary information on Edo period agriculture and on the subsequent changes in Japanese agrarian life. Farm manual research, it goes without saying, does not involve the study of existing farm villages and/or farming practices, but rather concerns the collection and analysis of documents dealing with such. This type of investigation necessarily begins with aミociocultural analysis of the contents of the various farm manuals. The first step、in our research comprises an overview of the genre-its compostion and contents-and includes such inf()rmation as date and region of publication,飴㎜at, authorship, publication, and distribution. Already, befbre WWII,the bibliography ofJapanese farm manuals had gone through several transformations. The following is a chronological list of pre-war farm manuals. Nosho】!oran農書要覧(Agricultural Handbook), Naimusho Kannokyoku内務省勧農局(Ministry of Autonomy,Bureau of Agriculture Promotion), January,1878 Honcho Noii Sanko Shomoku 本朝農事参考書目(A Bibliography of Reference Books on Japanese Agricultural Affairs), Noshomusho Nosho Hensanjo(Ministry of CQmmercial Agricultural Affairs,Farm Manual Editing Office),December,1883. ・Honcho IVoii Sanko Shomoku: Dainihen本朝農事参考書目:第二編(A Bibliography of Re fe rence Books on Japanese Agricultural Affairs:Second Edition), Noshomusho Nosho Hensanjo, December,1885. No/i Sankosho Kaidai 農事参考書解題 (A Bibliography of Rdbrence Books on Agriculture), Noshomusho, July,1890. ノ(onosho Mokuroku古農書目録(A Bibliography of Ancient Farm Manuals),Koide Manji小出満 二,March,1929. 八(omin Sh iryo Kaisetsu農民史料解説(A Discourse on Historical Materials as regards the Peasantry), Ono Takeo小野武夫,1933. Nihon Konosho Mokuroku日本古農書目録(A Bibliography of Ancient Japanese Farm Manu- als),Kan Kikutaro菅菊太郎,1939. The above bibliography consists both of .farm manuals commissioned by the governmρnt and those written by individual agriculturalists. However, it is inevitably lacking in complete data as regards the selection of farm manuals, theirpublication dates and regional biases, authorship, and the like. In view of the incomplete nature ofany bibliography ofpre-war farm manuals, the Japan Team has compiled a list of post・war farm manuals-amounting to a total of 133 works-in keeping with the prevailing interest in loca1・history research, Below is a topical review ofthe present research on farm rnanuals: Individual Farm〃伽αα1∫’This topic is a fundamental one in so far as farm manual research is concerned, and is the starting Point for the present report and for no∫ho studies in general. Previous research on farm manuals has been limited to a content analysis of the genre itself. However, a thorough investigation of individual manuals also requires that attention be paid to such local socio-historical factors as the structure of farm villages, agricultural administration, and farmer class consciousness. Moreover, farm manual research need not be relegated to an exclusively historical analysis. Rather, nosho research must also incorporate data derived from modern-day farm manuals and farm village issues so as to assist in reformulating Edo period nosho studies. Such an approach is invaluable in charting agricultural development from the Edo to modern periods, and, concomitantly, for reevaluating the modernization ofJapanese agriCulture. Comparative Farm〃伽πα〃~esearch:First of all, the different types of nosho formats are described along with their respective characteristics. Regional differences are also accounted for in farm manuals, such as the fact that Western Japan constitutes a zone of high agricultural productivity and Eastern Japan one of low(er)productivity. A comparison can be made of regional farm manuals focusing on agricultural technologies:types, distribution, adoption, and utilization, as well as on the establishment and structure of farming villages and farmer class consciousness. Last but not least, a comparative study ofJapanese farm manuals also serves as a point of departure for a wider scale comparison ofJapanese,Korean, and Chinese farm manuals as well as ofAsian and Western manuals. Original and Secondary Farm Manuals, Original farm manuals re fer to those nosho constituting primary bibliographic sources, while secondary farm manuals are edited, abridged,or otherwise altered versions of the original text. The latter were widely disseminated during the Edo period in a woodblock printed format. Over ten such nosho presently can be accounted for. The sociological circumstances and reasons of printing are explained, together with a review of・the popularization of agricultural know.how during the Edo period. AComρarison()f Nosho and、Related Genres’Apart from farm manuals per se,such texts as oraimono往来物(copybooks), kγukosho救荒書(crisis management texts), honzosho本草書 (herb catalogues), ringyosho林業書(lumbering handbooks), doboku chisuisho土木治水書(ir「igation engineering texts),ノikatasho地方書(provincial administration manuals), kakun家訓 (household codes),nomin kokoroe農民.心そ#(instructions for farmers)・nogγo horeisho農業法令 書and noii nisshi ee事日記(daily journal of farm affairs). Of course the above four topics will not be independently treated;rather they constitute the key elements ofamore general, comprehensive, and interrelated treatment of farm manuals. The research thus far undertaken by the Japan Team has covered only the first topic. The STT Project of United Nations University offers us the opportunity to complete our research on the remaining three topics,as well as to undertake a historical survey of farm manuals。
