| 内容記述 | 1953 年初演のアーサー・ミラーの戯曲『るつぼ』は、1692 年のセイラムでの魔女狩りを扱ったものである。1940 年代50 年代にアメリカで起きたいわゆる赤狩りにも触発されたことが知られている。本稿は、現在も再演されることが多いこの古典作品の意義を、これまでのピューリタン研究の文脈にも照らし、１つの歴史解釈として検討してみる。1930 年代にピューリタンの原典読み直しにより、ピューリタンはより人間的な存在として捉えられるようになった。さらに1960年代以降の新しい社会史の台頭により、セイラムの魔女狩り研究も17 世紀末の社会的政治的不安への心因性の反応という観点から説明されるようになった。そのようなピューリタンの知識に照らしてみると、ミラーはこの作品の中で、意図した通りに事件の「本質」を描いているようである。そしてその「本質」が、今日不寛容になっている社会で、人々の心に強く響くのであろう。 | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | Arthur Miller’s The Crucible （1953） is a play based on the Salem witch-hunt of 1692 in Puritan New England. It is also known as a work inspired by the Communist witch-hunts of the 1940s and 1950s in the U.S. The play is a classic and is still staged frequently with the most recent productions in 2016, on Broadway and in Tokyo, in which parallels were drawn with the current political atmosphere in both countries. This essay reflects on the relevance of the play today. Although the work is a fictional representation of events in Salem in 1692, the play could well stand as a historical analysis of the events that took place at that time. Scholarship on Puritanism since the 1930s has brought to light the humane aspects of Puritan culture rather than the dogmatic ones. Since the advent of new social history in the 1960s, extensive research on the Salem witch-hunt has been conducted and the mass hysteria has been explained in terms of psychogenic reactions to the social and political anxieties at the time. Viewed in the light of recent knowledge, The Crucible captures “the essential nature of the events,” as Miller intended, and this ‘essential nature’ has echoes in an atmosphere of increasing intolerance in society today. | |||||||||||
