| 内容記述 | 歴史的にみて叛乱や政変、革命と呼ばれる現象はしばしば課税を引き金として起きており、農民叛乱（ワット・タイラーの乱）や清教徒革命を経験したイングランド社会も例外ではなかった。本論の対象はシェイクスピア歴史劇における課税表象である。シェイクスピア歴史劇の課税に注目してみれば歴史劇の顕著な特性を新たに指摘できる可能性があり、とりわけテクストに埋め込まれた同時代の観客・読者の声なき声を聞くことができるのかもしれない。なによりも歴史劇の課税表象を分析すれば、従来のエリザベス朝演劇研究では視角にすら入ってこなかった同時代の王国統治制度における最大の課題が見えてくる。国王大権と議会立法権の間には、課税をめぐってここからはお互い絶対に妥協できない一線が存在したからである。 | |||||||||||

| 内容記述 | Scholars of Early Modern English dramas will encounter references to taxation at many points in Shakespeare’s history plays, such as “tenth and fifteenth”, “subsidy”, “benevolence” and “forced loan”, but there has been no proper introduction to the meanings of the terms or their historical contexts in Shakespearean criticism. This paper has three aims: firstly to clarify from both historical and historiographical contexts the fiscal terms referred to in Shakespeare’s history plays: secondly to points out that theatrical representations of taxation in the playhouses of London in the 1590s were in many cases unique, even anachronistic and significantly fictional: and finally to suggest that the representations reflected a constitutional defect of that system from the complaints of contemporary taxpayers against “non-parliamentary taxation”, a heated polemics led to a violent clash, the Civil War. | |||||||||||
