内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 In the previous studies of English morphology, the definitions of conversion seem to be vague and conflicting. They are based on a narrow range of words, mostly denominal verbs, and include as many as three approaches (zeroderivation, category underspecification, re-listing). By taking into account additional types of conversion, such as interjections (e.g. oops), phrases (e.g. oh my God), phrasal verbs (e.g. giveaway) and idioms (e.g. state of the art), which have rarely been mentioned in the previous studies, this paper seeks to clarify the definitions of conversion: (a) formal identicality in the deep structure, (b) phonological identicality in the deep structure, (c) semantic relations between converted words and their bases, (d) different grammatical functions between converted words and their bases, and (e) re-listing plus directionality from bases to their converted words. Based on these definitions, this paper also argues that adjectival passive participles (e.g. broken in a broken vase), adjectival progressives (e.g. interesting in an interesting book) and attributive modifiers (e.g. Ebola in an Ebola patient) should not be considered conversions. As for adjectival passive participles and adjectival progressives, their bases are not passive participles and progressives of the verbs (e.g. broken (v), interesting (v)), but their original forms (e.g. break, interest). Since the bases in original forms and their derivatives are in violation of (a) formal identicality and (b) phonological identicality, they should not be categorized into conversion. According to Huddleston and Pullum (2002: 1643), since all nouns other than pronouns can be used as attributive modifiers, Ebola in an Ebola patient can be considered as one of innate trait of the noun Ebola. Attributive modifiers do not meet (d) different grammatical functions. Therefore, attributive modifiers should not be categorized into conversion.
