内容記述 | In the 13th century, when Mechthild of Magdeburg lived, Germany and Western Europe were in the shadow of the conflict between the papalists and the imperialists that originated in the Investiture Controversy between Pope Gregory Ⅶ and the Holy Roman Emperor Henry Ⅳ. As a background to this conflict, it should be noted that the Bishop of Rome, a mere bishop of a city, had attained primacy over the other bishops and had acquired political as well as religious power. At first all bishops were equal, as the Apostles had been. But in the course of time, some bishops obtained primacy, which was recognized by other bishops. Already during the first few centuries of the Christian era, the Bishop of Rome had asserted his authority three times. However, not only did the Roman Bishop assert and pursue the primacy, but the other bishops acknowledged the importance of the Roman Church, and promoted its primacy. Nevertheless, the primacy of the Bishop of Rome over the bishops of Antioch, Alexandria, Carthage and other such cities was not recognized. Under the Roman emperor Constantine I, the status of Christianity changed dramatically. Christians, who had been persecuted, were now given preference. Through exemption from taxation, the building of churches and other preferential treatments, the Roman Church also enjoyed great benefit. The relocation of the Roman Empire’s seat of government from Rome to Constantinople had led to the city’s decline and created a political vacuum, which the Roman Bishop filled. As a result, his importance increased not merely in the religious sphere, but also in the political and social spheres. Ultimately, when the three Emperors of the Roman Empire, Gratian, Valentinian Ⅱ and Theodosius Ⅰ, had given the Diocese of Rome credit for being a good example of Christian belief, the authority of the Roman Bishop increased a l the more. From then on, the Bishop of Rome clearly claimed primacy. | |||||
