内容記述 The conventional research on Yan Fu厳復(1854~1921)has for the most part depicted three phases in the development of his political ideas:an early ttprogressive”stage praising Western democratic institutions and criticizing Chinese despotism;asecond ttconservative” stage opposing the revolutionary movement to the Qing Dynasty;and a final ttreactionary”stage following the 1911 Revolutlon  supporting in practice the dictatorship of Yuan Shikai蓑世凱.   However, a reading of the texts containing Yan Fu’s political statements reveals that despite such position changes on a superficial leve1, his fundamental ideas never wavered thoughout his career.   Basically one notices a radical relativism based on the thought of Lao-zi『老子』and Zhuang-zi『荘子』,as well as a consistent utilitarlanlsm  glvlng top priority to the good of society. Moreover, he argues throughout that since in reality there are no perfect institutions,  there in no need to become attached to one fixed view;rather, optimum solutions to problems should be selected as the times demand from among all the alternatives.   Since this notion demands that choices be made based on the present situation, it also regards as dangerous the development of political ideals, or any other ideals for that matter, into dogma.   At the same time, this indicates a consciousness that such a tendency  towards dogmatization was a deep rooted fault within the Chinese way of thinking, and the criticism of such a tendency is a consistent theme running through Yan Fu’s whole career.   For example, on the issue of ctfreedom,”while at times Yan praises and promotes it, and at others refutes and discourages it, his criticism of the dogmatization of ideas regarding it never wavers.   This, given this kind of ttutilitarianism”and‘tcritique of dogma,” the changes that occurred in Yan Fu’s evaluation of traditional Confucian doctrine only can be described as superficial.
