内容記述 | In this paper, I undertake a comparative study of two theories of hereditary monarchy. One theory is by George Berkeley, and the other is by David Hume. The comparison is intended to answer the following questions: First, how did Berkeley criticize the doctrine of passive obedience presented by William King, Archbishop of Dublin. And how did Hume defend the legitimacy of the kingship of George I(1714─1727), who became king without inheriting the title? Second, how did Hume and Berkeley analyze the relationship between succession to the throne and religion. And tird, why should humans obey the law of nature? Berkeley’s and Hume’s views of political obligation are in sharp contrast. William King sought to offer an alternative principle to the Divine Right of Kings. Berkeley, however, was skeptical of William King’s doctrine of passive obedience. He held that King settled in Ireland during the Glorious Revolution because it was in conformity with God’s will. Hume, on the other hand, considers the advantages and disadvantages of a restricted monarchy when he discusses the Hanoverian king, who became a monarch without hereditary succession and maintained a stable throne. William King also argues that the throne rests on the principle that uses Christian doctrines, claiming that even if Adam had not been our ancestor, God would have qualified him as a king. Berkeley pointed out that there is a contradiction in his view: Berkeley stated that there is a law of nature, which is God’s command, that ‘You should not resist the supreme power’, and further divided it into two to explain why they ought to be obeyed. On the other hand, Hume argued for the benefits of a monarchy while also respecting the moderation of power. He held that since kingship depends on property, the advantages of a mixed constitution that restricted kingship. Ultimately, Hume saw that a restricted monarchy that guarantees people’s freedom and properties is more beneficial to society than absolute monarchy, or the oppressivement which people are tempted to overthrow. | |||||
