内容記述 | Ito¯ Jakuchu¯ (1716–1800) devised masume gaki (grid or mosaic-like painting), a type of painting in which the picture plane is partitioned into a graph-like form and color is added to the resulting squares. The extant examples of masume gaki are White Elephant and Other Beasts (private collection) and the two mosaic screens Birds and Animals in the Flower Garden (Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art) and Birds, Animals, and Flowering Plants (The Shin’enkan Foundation, Etsuko and Joe Price Collection), which is similar in content to the Shizuoka Museum’s work; and. This study pursues an iconographic analysis of these bird-and-animal screens based on the cultural currents of the latter half of the eighteenth century. Moreover, the works are considered from the standpoint of natural history, as well as the fascination with the foreign, i.e. exoticism, which included objects and ideas from China and Holland. Both the central figures of the white elephant and the phoenix may be thought of as carrying with them an auspicious message of peace. On the other hand, the stable setting of birds and animals gathered along a shore enclosed by trees may be inspired by Western images of paradise. Jakuchu¯ fused together the iconographies of China and the West, creating an exotic paradise in which birds and animals that evince a message of peace relax. Focusing attention on the birds and animals that only appear in the Shin’enkan’s screens, this study also presents the originality evident in this work. | |||||
