内容記述 | Raymond Carver is regarded as a great minimalist writer in the 1980s。 Some critics claim that minimalism, in general, is boring because it lacks author expression and emotion. And.we are sometimes confused about how to interpret“The Bath.” “Minimalism”is a term originally u.sed to explain a movement in American painting and sculpture from the 60s onward. The common properties between minimal painting and sculpture, and literature are that the relation・ ship among the appreciator, the work, and things unexpressed is of great importance. On the surface,1ittle is expressed;the appreciator’s imagination of what is left unexpressed is required. In other words, active reading is inevitable in minimalist literature. Reading“The Bath”from this stalld・ point, we realize this is a full work of art. The content of the first half of“A Small Good Thing”is similar to that of“The Bath”;however, in“A Small Good Thing,”the reader’s interpretation is limited because of Carver’s authoritative lead. So, the role of the reader in the two stories is completely different. Thus, minimalism is not at all a trivial literary movement, but, rather, a highly significant movement, Carver is a distinguished minimalist writer who can, with his acute sensitivity, project the weirdness of daily life to the reader, subtly but explicitly, without full expression of it. | |||||
