regarding　the　work　as　a　practice　of　Junsui・shosetsu－ron，　An　Essay　on　Pure　Fiction，　written　by　the　same　author， and　the　other　as　a　social　novel．　Both　of　them　try　tQ　read　the　text　in　terms　of　the　features　deviant　from　the essence　of　the　work，　and　cannot　be　considered　reasonable　and　effective．　Besides，　this　work　has　too　often　been regarded　with　a　bias　as　a　kind　Qf　popular　literature　which　is　not　worth　consideration　since　all　estimation　was made　in　Fuzoku・shosetsu－ron，　An　Essay　on　Genre　Novels． 　　This　essay　intends　to　be　free　from　the　restraints　of　these　conventional　viewpoints　and　grasp　the　text　as　a dynamic　structure，　and　to　indicate　that　its　characters　depending　on　their　correlatlons　are　worked　by　the　composition 　of‘Tokyo／Osaka’－oppositions　including　the　ambiguities　on　various　Ievels．　Both　Shigezumi　Takayuki’s marriage　and　Nire　Bunshichi’s“Plan”to　induce　the　collapse　of　the　stock　market　of　Tokyo　show　the　structuraI correspondence　by　functioning　as　the　erasers　of　‘Tokyo／Osaka’幽con且icts，－Kazoku－kaigi°should　be　taken　as　a
