The work is a collection of mysterious novels published in 1685, written by Saikaku Ihara(1642─1693). There are several stories about women playing an active role in this work. Through them, this article considers how women are depicted. In conclusion, the women in this work have the power to turn emotions into actions. For example, the protagonist named Hisa in Volume 2─3, “Mizusuji No Nukemiti”, held a grudge against her boss, because she hurt Hisa’s face. Then, she became a spirit and murdered her boss. She put the emotion of resentment into action. This is the power to turn emotions into actions. The same power is depicted in the other few episodes. Also, Saikaku published “Koushoku Gonin Onna” in 1686. This work is a collection of women’s love stories and became very famous. This love story demonstrates the power of women like in “Saikaku Shokokubanasi”. He applied the way of depicting women that he gained from writing “Saikaku Shokokubanasi” to his next work. Therefore, “Saikaku Shokokubanasi” is an important novel that forms the basis of the famous stories after that.
