How do we teach a different use of the same language form, which is already taught in an elementary course, in an intermediate course? This paper proposes that we should first classify language forms in terms of their many functions, and then teach the language forms having the same functions together. To elucidate this point, we deal with the semantic function of an actual potential as in “sakadati-ga dekita,” which has two semantic interpretations. “kodomonokoro sakadati-ga dekita” is interpreted as the potential ability in the time of the past as in “I could stand on my hands in my childhood.”“kinou hajimete sakadati-ga dekita” is interpreted as an action that has been actually done as in “I was able to stand on my hands for the first time in my life yesterday.” The second one is the semantic function of the actual potential. First, we use a corpus to illustrate the fact that only a few examples of the function of actual potential exist. Second, we clarify when the function of actual potential is used. The function of actual potential is used to fill the gaps of non-volitional verbs and paired transitive verbs. This is the reason behind there being few examples of these because the incidence of such gaps is less. Finally, we propose a teaching methodology for teaching the function of actual potential.
