In 1998, Ray Edmondson, a leading audiovisual archivist in Australia, was entrusted with the task of assembling a basic primer on audiovisual archiving to ensure the collection, preservation, and provision of access to audiovisual materials. Since then, his Audiovisual Archiving: Philosophy and principles has become a key text in the field with its lates（t 3rd）edition published in 2016. The book defines basic terminology and emphasizes the importance of education and training of audiovisual archivists, as well as networking within the profession, and although it introduces new topics such as the digital divide, advocacy, or environmental impact, its core philosophy and principles remain consistent. The Japanese version published in 2018 is expected to stimulate discussion and raise awareness of this area of study in order to save audiovisual materials, in which Japan lags behind other countries.
