内容記述 | The purpose of this paper is to examine some aspects of Maria Edgeworth’s fictional and non・fictional writings about Ireland, focusing on the description of the peasantry, their rural life, and their language, and to try to think about her positiori in Irish literary canon, which Terry Eagleton has truly referred to as the first‘nationar Irish novelist. Chapter l attempts to illustrate that she, as the member of the landed class, had both physical and epistemological proximity to the peasantry in her large estate. One of the most striking illustration can be found in the scene in which the protagonist in Ennui(1809)comes back froln England to his estate inIreland. Chapter 2 surveys her firsthand knowledge of Ireland and the Irish, ranging from the economical custom to fairly tales, which are explicit in the glossary appended to Castle Rackrent(1800).As we examine this point, it is necessary to keep in view the political content at that time;Act of Union in 1800. Chapter 3 shows us how strongly she advocates the originality of the vernacular in Ireland. It is clear that her intention to write Essa)ノon 1万sぬBzalls(1802)is to remove the English prejudice against the spoken language in Ireland, and in The .4bsentee(1817),she seems to put the importance on the oral tradition. What these examination make clear at once is that Maria Edgeworth was really interested in the Irish, appreciated the Irish tradition, and was able to depict them in her writings admirably, even though, under the political unrest at that time, her viewpoint was always what was regarded as the progressive Anglo-Irish landed class. It is true that individual characters in her writings are attractive in their own way, but the reason why her writings have become the subject in Irish studies today is that she depicts Ireland as the social, cultural, and political entity, as a totalized‘nation.’ | |||||
