内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The terms good spirit (zendama) and evil spirit (akudama), which are the characteristic features of kibyoshi, are still used today. For example, good germ and bad cholesterol. Santo Kyoden’s kibyoshi “Shingakuhayasomegusa” was published in 1790 and it is known as the best seller of Kyoden. The protagonist’s heart of the “good spirit and evil spirit”, which had been personifi ed, is represented by means of imprinting the letters of good and bad on a round face and describing a man with a loincloth and naked to the waist as a distinctive character. After the publication of “Shingakuhayasomegusa”, Kyoden’s concept of “good spirit and evil spirit” were adapted by vernacular prose, ukiyoe, and the Kabuki theatre. This paper is to collect works drawing the “good spirit and evil spirit” which were made under the infl uence of “Shingakuhayasomegusa” and review their features by each period. It covers Meiji period (1868-1912).In ukiyoe which were drawn one’s good or bad behaviors the “good spirit and evil spirit” were used a lot. In omochae (toy pictures for children) the “good spirit and evil spirit” were used to teach children both good and bad. They were used more active education than in the Edo period. In the Meiji period, same as the end of the Edo period the “good spirit and evil spirit”were used in caricature as useful signs to personify things by putting names of things on faces. One of the features in the Meiji period the “good spirit and evil spirit” were described wearing clothes, which was for prohibiting people from going outside without clothes. This was done under law.
