| 内容記述 | John Stuart Mill claims that there are higher and lower pleasures. Although this claim is an essential part of his utilitarian thought, it is disputable. Putting it simply, there are two interpretations of the claim. On one interpretation, Mill offered a refutation of Bentham's theory of utilitarianism. On the other, Mill advanced a general scheme which was to complement Bentham's utilitarianism. Those who put forward the former interpretation argue that Mill's claim is incompatible with Bentham's quantitative utilitarianism, and that he also tried to reject it. Those who advance the latter interpretation claim that Bentham's own theory did not fail to appreciate the different, qualities of pleasures, while Mill also intended to defend Bentham's theory from its detractors. This paper takes up this interpretive dispute relating to Mill's claim, and seeks to examine Mill's relationship to Bentham's theory. The purpose is to clarify what part of Bentham's utilitarianism Mill criticized, and what part Mill actually took over. To achieve this, I will first pay close attention to Mill's assessment of Bentham's theory, and try to shed new light on Mill's position. In particular, I will focus on Mill's essay entitled ‘Bentham'. This essay contains the first, straightforward statement of Mill's own view about Bentham. In his Autobiography, Mill says that ‘Bentham' contains a perfectly just criticism of his theory though it may be a little too harsh at times. This essay offers a key to the understanding of the real difference between Mill and Bentham. After clarifying what Mill says in 'Bentham', I will go on to examine Mill's claim of the different qualities of pleasures and see how Mill's assessment of Bentham's theory is reflected in Utilitarianism. | |||||
