This study tries to suggest the period of the first appearance of the iconography of Hanaguruma-zu and investigates its later transformations in the history of art. Hanaguruma c an b e d efined a s a c art with two, three or four wheels, which is loaded with various kinds of flowers.Hanaguruma-zu is a group of works or paintings whose main motif is Hanaguruma.The first of these were painted in the early Edo period, and there now exists many examples of them. Nevertheless, few researchers have attempted to clarify their origin or study the transformations that have taken place. This paper begins by examinig some representative works of Hanaguruma-zu, and shows that this iconography was established at the Kan-eiera when genre painting and ikebana b ecame p opular. Secondly,it a rgues that these art works can be classified into three periods according to iconographical changes. In the first period, a Hanaguruma is represented without human figures in a tranquil and solemn composition on the golden ground in the way it gives sacred (Sei). In the second period, this motif, often a part of which is a dynamic composition, is surrounded by many other luxurious objects and imaginational persons. In the third period, the Hanaguruma motif is finally appreciated by wider social classes.
