Fonction de l’épopée guerrière, Paris, Champion, 2006; “Narrative Structure and Political Construction: The Epic at Work”,Oral Tradition 23/1 (2008), pp. 15-27) to propose a new interpretation of a number of popular modern texts. Great epics of the past (e.g., Iliad, Song of Roland, Hôgen and Heiji monogatari) can ultimately be defined through the concept of “epic work”. The detailed analysis led in Goyet’s 2006 book showed that those epics, born in times of great social change, and which everyone knew by heart, ultimately invented a completely new conception of society and political power. In the modern era, such epics have disappeared nearly everywhere in the world. However, this article shows that their essential traits have been retained by a small number of modern texts, including Tolstoy’s War and Peace and Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
