How can we understand others without reducing them to those that we do understand?  is is the question that Emmanuel Levinas, a French philosopher, struggled to answer throughout his life. Focusing on his unusual notion of ‘reason’ in Totality and Infinity (1961), I try to clarify Levinas’ thinking of ‘an understanding of others’. To start with, having taken a look at some implications of his notion of ‘reason’, I examine why Levinas holds that ‘reason’ is the bearer of a relationship to others. Secondly, analyzing Totality and Infinity, I consider the possibility of understanding the other person without reducing them to those as we understand them.
