Although many art-historians have concerned themselves with these paintings, the meaning and signi cance of them for the Dutch people of that period, especially for those living in Wijk bij Duurstede and Middelharnis, has by no means been adequately studied. By closely examining motifs(windmill, sailboat, avenue, nursery, etc.)and by referring to the recent literature of related fi elds(technological history, economic history, agricultural history, etc.)the author of this essay tries to bring these paintings back to their original milieu, to the Netherlands in the second half of the seventeenth century.
