内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 Kyoko Mori, who was born in 1957 and was brought up in Japan, decided to write an autobiographic novel, S乃ゴ2罐o’3 Daughteプ, not in her native language Japanese but曇n English which has been used since she gave up living in Japan with her loveless father and stepmother. She learned in Kobe Jogakuin bdfore she left her home country but she transferred to a university in the United States and began to study English Literature and Writing. She has obtained the Ph. D. and now she teaches as an associate professor of English and Creative Writing at St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin. She got married with an American so she is nQ more a Japanese but a Iegal American citizen. It takes a little time for us Japanese to understand the reason why Mori chose English to write her first novel of which the setting is in皿odem Ja・ pan;however, for Mori, Japanese language has so much problems.0且e, which can be imagined且rst of a11, is its ambiguity. Mori dislikes the equiv一 ocation that is often used when Japanese people talk. That equlvocatlon ls caused not only by the Japanese Ianguage structure but also by the Japa一 血ese traditional politeness. Mori was not able to understand the real sense of that pQliteness until her丘rst coming back to Japan in 1990, because that kind of politeness had always been connected to her father’s and her step・ mother’s hypocrisy. Choosing English tQ write is strongly concerned with her connict in her fa皿ily. . In the且rst chapter of this paper, I will give consideration to her problem of Japanese Ianguage by reading her biography The 」Drea〃z oア Water and some interviews from newspapers. In the second chapter, I will examine the novel itself, especially the 12th chapter in which the main character Yuki五nally gets over her mother’s suicide. It is much cQncerned with Monet’s picture. Shizuko’5 Da ugter is Yuki’s initiation story. Mori wrote Yuki’s mental anguish with the beautiful descriptions of Japanese seasonal changes, Yuki’s anguish is also Mori’s anguish which has not been completely erased since her own mother’s suicide.
