内容記述 | When the Chosun dynasty was established following collapse of the former Koryo dynasty, Buddhism of the Korean peninsula that had flourished during the Koryo dynasty encountered severe government opPresslon・ Quite a few researches had viewed these phenomena from the standpoint of the central Chosun government who placed restrictions on Buddhism;on the other hand, this article turns around the previous angle and explores how the local society had taken in the same changes. To do so, the rough sketch of the anti-Buddhist policy based on the Annαls of the Chosun Daynαstbl is introduced first. Then the cases of the Kyongsang province after the government oppressive policy which was restricting the number of Buddhist monasteries in effect in 1424 (the sixth year of the king Sejong’s reign) is further analyzed・ The previous researches have agreed that the restriction policy did not necessarily induce closing of the monasteries, which wgre not reserved by the government. However, the case study reveals quite a different result. When the restriction policy was in effect every monastery had to define its sect either Zen Buddhism or Non-Zen Buddhism, and within the sect, the not-appointed monasteries were to close down. Yet, another interesting point is that the number of not-appointed monasteries had gradually increased so that the policy soon lost its binding Power. Afterwards the balance of Zen Buddhism and Non-Zen Buddhism had been lost in this province. The increased nUmber of Zen Buddhism monasteries was a result of adjustment between the control of central government and the actual situation of local society. | |||||
