depicted　in　novels　and　dramas．　In　particularly，　it　is　difficult　to　clearly distinguish　between　a　historical　source　and　a　legend　with　respect　to exemplary　women（列女）．　Further，　even　Liu　Xiang’s（劉向）Lienti zhuαn（列女伝）and　Liena　zhuan　that　included　official　histories （zhengshi，正史）are　narrative　in　nature　to　some　extent．　However， although　the　number　of　exemplary　women　increased　since　the　Yuan dynasty，　their　biographies　became　impersonal．　There　was　a considerable　change　in　the　awareness　of　exemplary　women　from　the Song　dynasty　to　the　Ming　dynasties．　I　have　attempted　to　study　some aspects　of　the　legends　of　exemplary　women　in　the　late　Southern－Song period　that　were，　by　some　accounts，　formed　during　the　late　Yuan　and early　Ming　times． 　　　The　legends　of　exemplary　women　considered　in　this　article　are，　for example，．　the　legend　of　Tan　jiefu（謹節婦），　who　was　novelized　in Jiαndαo　yuhua（勇灯余話）in　the　early　Ming　times，　and　Wang　zhenfu （王貞婦），who　was　honoured　by　the　Mongolian　literati．　Although these　two　cases　differ　ill　terms　of　how　they　came　to　become　legends， they　share　common　patterns　with　respect　to　the　manner　in　which　they were　uncovered　as　historical　facts，　dramatized，　and　transformed　into literatし【re．　Further，　they　effectively　showcase　the　feelings　of七he literati　in　those　days。 　　　Ibelieve　that　the　war　and　confusion　in　the　late　Yuan　and　early Ming　periods　revived　the　memory　of　the　legends　of　exemplary　women in　the　late　Song　period．　Moreover，　people　superimposed　memory　of history　on　reality，　it　might　be　advantageous　to　her　for　making　legend． On　the　other　hand，　exemplary　women　in　the　late　Yuan　period　seldom became　dramatic　legends．　It　is　likely　that　society　could　have attempted　to　create　legends　in　proportion　to　the　number　of　exemplary women．　However，　the　political　aim　of　the　local　elites　and　the　change
