Although Chengguan states that there exists a possibility of becoming a Buddha at a comparatively lower level of the cultivation system, shixin(十信) or chuzhu(初住), Anguo asserts that Buddhahood can only be attained at a comparatively higher level of the system, chudi(初地). This implies that according to Anguo it is not possible to become a buddha in the present iife. On the other hand, Chengguan eagerly supports the idea. Further, I claim that Chengguan’s Buddhism does not imply the end of cultivation when one reaches the level of shixin or chuzhu and attains Buddhahood. One should continue in the efforts to cultivate oneself even after becoming a buddha at shixin or chuzhu because there are major differences between the primary buddha at low levels and the one at the highest level. This subtle position of Cheng guan’s thought should be considered as the consequence of his responce to two contemporary Buddhism sects, Xuanzhuang-weishi(玄 唯識) and Chanzong(禅宗).   In the first chapter, I prove that Anguo is Lishe(利渉), a disciple of Xuanzhuang. In the following two chapters, I analyze Chengguan’s comments against Anguo in detail. Further, in the fourth chapter, I highlight that the famous system of attaining Buddhahood through three lives(三生成仏), in keeping with the Huayan(華厳)Buddhism, is closely linked to Chengguan’s conviction that one can attain Buddhahood in the present life. In the last chapter, I discuss the difference between Chengguan’s thought on attaining Buddhahood and the viewpoint of the Chanzong sect.}, pages = {287--319}, title = {清涼澄観の安国批判をめぐって : 初発心成仏と一生有望 (古代東アジアの仏教)}, year = {2005}, yomi = {マブチ, マサヤ} }
