Following the death of Shimomura, his pupils Professor Atsushi Takeda and Professor Hajime Shimamoto began to classify all of the letters, including the 15 letters presented here. I have reprinted and revised these letters from Miyake to Tanabe, which were written between 1924 and 1954 (three years prior to Tanabe’s death). Tanabe critically succeeded the philosophical tradition started by Nishida. For Miyake, who was a pupil of Nishida in Kyoto, Tanabe was a precious and esteemed adviser. When Miyake was an Assistant Professor of Tohoku University in Sendai, he felt particularly lonely because he had no colleagues with whom he could have discussions. In such a diffi cult situation, exchanging letters with Tanabe provided him an important means of communication.
