Bowlby’s attachment theory was introduced to Japan in the 1970s, and empirical studies of attachment were activated using the Strange Situation Procedure （SSP） in the 1980s. However, the SSP appeared to be such a strong stressor of Japanese infants that the number of C-type infants increased. Subsequently, SSP studies declined, because no correlation was found between infants’ attachment type and temperament. In the 1990s, an internal working model of attachment was proposed, and the study of attachment was revitalized, particularly studies related to the intergenerational transmission of attachment. Current research focuses involve examining not only intergenerational transmission, but also intergenerational interaction, and promoting practical studies that contribute to the prevention of child abuse.
