This study compares school and club cultures and their relationship with the incidence of heatstroke in secondary and higher education in Japan and Malaysia. We conducted surveys among grade 8 students and their teachers in Japan and Malaysia and among college students in Japan. Then, we analyzed descriptive statistics and probit regression results based on the data from those surveys. We cannot find a systematic unique culture or characteristics that increase the incidence of heatstroke for grade 8 students in Japan and Malaysia, but we see some suggestive findings. Compared to junior high school students in Japan, secondary school students in Malaysia are less likely to get heatstroke and severe symptoms of heatstroke. College students in sports clubs are more likely to get heatstroke, be hospitalized, and be taken by ambulance in Japan. For grade 8 students in Malaysia and college students in Japan, those with higher scores in harmony are more likely to get heatstroke. Lastly, those who said that it is difficult to say thirsty or sick during extracurricular club activities are more likely to get heatstroke for college students in Japan. |
