| 内容記述 | Following the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Italy came under the control of Germanic tribes that had begun to migrate southwards from Northern Europe around 200 BC. After 100 AD, climatic change and population increase led to a rise in migration, and eventually a combination of tribes was formed in Central and Eastern Europe.The Goths, who had reached the shores of the Black Sea, frequently invaded and plundered the Roman Empire after 238 AD. By no later than 291, they had divided into the eastern Goths (the Ostrogoths or Greutungi-Ostrogothi), and the western Goths (the Visigoths or Tervingi-Vesi). Although the Roman Empire attempted to control the barbarians by providing them with money every year, and by incorporating their warriors into the Roman army as auxiliaries, the relationship was an uneasy one, and conflict between the Visigoths and the Roman Empire continued. Rome suffered heavy damage until it gave the Visigoths a dominion within the territory of the Roman Empire, and the Visigothic Kingdom was founded.Meanwhile, the Gothic bishop Ulfila (s) propagated Arianism to the Visigoths, and as a result all the Germanic tribes within Roman territory, except for the Franks, were converted to Arian Christianity – a situation that would later cause problems for the Roman Catholic Church. | |||||||||||
