内容記述タイプ Abstract
内容記述 The Shanghai Science Institute is the only comprehensive research institute in modern Japan that includes “natural science” in its name. The Institute was an important component of the “Eastern Cultural Project” (also known as the “China Cultural Project”) implemented by the Japanese government under the Special Accounting Law for China Cultural Project, which was passed by the National Diet in 1923; and it operated for 15 years and 6 months̶from April 1931 to September 1945. With a “research scope covering almost every aspect of natural sciences”, the Institute brought together Japan’s leading scholars and scientific researchers at the time. Among them were loyal scholars beholden to the Emperor who aimed to demonstrate “the advanced science of the empire”, as well as leftist scientists who had fled Japan to escape political persecution. The achievements of these researchers were presented to the world through the Institute’s two academic journals, Shanghai Shizen Kagaku Kenkyuujo Ihou and Journal of the Shanghai Science Institute, which were regularly published in Japanese and English, respectively. Another side of these natural scientists’ passion for literary creation was demonstrated in the official journal Nature, which was inscribed by Lu Xun himself. This paper attempts to outline the lifestyle and characteristics of this special group of Japanese expatriates in modern Shanghai by utilizing the diplomatic archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, the various publications issued by the Institute, the various memoirs and personal letters of these researchers and their family members, and interviews conducted by the author with the researchers’ descendants.
