内容記述 | Prior research has shown that World War I brought about a negative view of European civilization in Japanese thought. This paper examines what the actual state of civilization theory and science discussed during World War I was, with a focus on Tanaka Ōdō.In examining scientific theory during the interwar period, clarifying scientific theory during World War I will help clarify the ideological impact of World War I through comparison. This paper reveals the following. In the first section, we have conducted an educational campaign to prevent the Japanese public from uncritically accepting Tagore’s criticism of European civilization by pointing out the problems of Eastern civilization. In the second section, Tanaka opposed calls for a turning point in civilization, defending rather the “early modern civilization” in Europe since the Renaissance and refuting the overestimation of World War I. In the third section, he does not deny “early modern civilization” itself by examining the relationship between wisdom and knowledge, but finds its inherent problems, which led him to sympathize with former denouncers of science.Tanaka Ōdō deepened his examination of “early modern civilization,” found its inherent problems, and sought to overcome them in response to European civilization and science, which had come under criticism in the wake of World War I. He thus became sympathetic to the former detractors of science. In this way, Tanaka sought to show the orientation of “early modern civilization” so that it could legitimately succeed the Renaissance and the French Revolution, which he regarded as its symbols. In this sense, we can conclude that he did not equate World War I with the Renaissance or the French Revolution. | |||||
