The illustrations of this book are attributed to Hishikawa Moronobu. The theme of the book is The Tale of Genji, a Japanese classical literature. Nevertheless, the images depict the characters’ emotions, such as sexual desire and jealousy. What is the origin of such representation? In this paper, I will focus on Ju¯jo¯ Genji and Osana Genji by Nonoguchi Ryu¯ho, in order to find an answer to the above-mentioned issue.
