| 内容記述 | The role of the Office of Aide-de-camp to the Emperor, one of the organs of Japanese military authorities, was a joint between the Emperor and the military authorities, and designing military policy was not their part. This is why many researchers have considered it as a medium which only informs the Emperor’s own voice. As a result, the Office of Aidede- camp to the Emperor has been regarded as a insignificant device in terms of political science. For example, the only noticeable research on this theme is David Anson TITUS’ Palace and Politics in Prewar Japan. And it is actually true that, an Aide-de-camp to the Emperor Kaizo YOSHIHASHI testifies, its principal role was a “speaking tube”. Nevertheless, new historical materials have proved recently that two chiefs of the Aide-de-camp to the Emperor, Takeji NARA and Shigeru HONJO, acted far beyond the mere role of “speaking tube”. NARA was appointed especially to train the Emperor, and he gave advices to the Emperor on political difficulties such as Huanggutun Incident, London Naval Treaty and Manchurian Incident. HONJO, the next chief, was appointed to persuade the Emperor. The military authorities had to cope with the Emperor’s fury caused by their actions like Nekka Operation, so Sadao ARAKI (Minister of War) and Jinzaburo MASAKI (vice chief of the General Staff; yet he was the chief in substance) expected him for calm down the Emperor’s enormous rage since he was a commandant of the Kwantung Army. Grand Chamberlain Kantaro SUZUKI and Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal Nobuaki MAKINO testify that, in spite of his effort to be neutral, HONJO’s behavior corresponded to the military authorities’ policy. These two examples suggest that the role of the Office of Aide-de-camp to the Emperor is not just a “speaking tube”. In this treatise, I analyse the supposed function of the Aide-de-camp to the Emperor first. Although an Imperial decree describes its role as a “speaking tube”, the Aide-de-camp was originally expected not only to assist the Emperor on military affairs but also to train him and build an intimate relationship with him, according to Proposal for the Aide-de-camp to the Emperor by Aritomo YAMAGATA. Next, I focus on personnel transfers of its chiefs to trace the change of its expected role. | |||||
