The opera, in three acts and seven scenes, was first performed at the Paris Opéra-Comique in 1951. In Fauchois’ libretto, the action follows the outlines of Flaubert’s novel. The drama centers on Emma’s tragic love and ruin. 　What can a novel do that an opera cannot ? In the libretto, it is impossible for all the characters to appear or be described in detail as in a novel. Some characters and episodes must be deleted and/or modified. For these reasons, the action must be simplified and formalized. In Madame Bovary, there are the music, and the visual effects, and all information is imparted by dialogues. These different forms of presentation result in a remarkable transformation of the novel, in order to fit the dramatic and musical demands of the opera. This transformation is seen in the unexpected plot twist in the last scene which was invented to specially adapt the novel to the music.
