This essay traces the four　stages of his development as a public speaker. These stages are not represented by the novels　or short stories, but by a series of poems, including “Danny Deever,” “Gunga Din,” “The　Native-Born,” “Recessional,” “The Islanders,” and “The Absent-Minded Beggar.” In 1902,　Kipling moved into Bateman’s with his family, after having become established a public　speaker. Clearly, he was a true genius, a genuine man-of-letters.
