<dc:description>The　Revenger’s　Tragedy，　published　anonymously　in　1607，　and from　1656　ascribed　to　Cyril　Tourneur，　belongs　to　the　genre　of revenge　tragedy．　It　is　a　dramatic　genre　that　flourished　in　the　late Elizabethan　and　Jacobean　period　and　its　theme　is，　needless　to　say， ‘revenge，． 　　There　are　two　revengers　in　this　play．　Young　Vindice，　a　hero， thinks　that　it　is　right　to　materialize　his　desire　for　revenge　for himself．　His　atitude　is　supported　by　the　new　sense　of　values．　On the　other　hand，01d　Antonio　has　the　opinion　that　human　being　does not　have　a　right　to　revenge　himself．　He　follows　the　old　sense　of values　based　on　conventional　Christian　ethics．　Their　contrary　at． titudes　reflects　contemporary　social　condition　that　there　is　a　double standard　of　revenge．　In　case　of　this　play，　unlike　other　revenge tragedies，　Vindice　the　revenger　who　is　usually　in　the　situation　of gaining　the　sympathy　of　a　large　audience　is　executedb　y　Antonio　who embodies　the　cunningness　and　conservativeness．　It　is　the　negative reaction　toward　the　hero’s　search　for　justice．　As　a　result，　the audience　is　taken　away　catharsis．　We　can　guess　that　the　author of　The　Revenger’s　Tragedy　was　skeptical　about　the　new　sense　of values　embodied　by　Vindice． 　　However，　in　the　world　of　this　play，　it　is　the　sterile　old　men who　are　left　alive．　It　make　the　audiences’eyes　severely　critical and　sneerful．　The　world　of　this　play　which　presented　at　the　Iast scene　and　the　eyes　of　the　audiences　make　this　play　gloomy．　The gloominess　is　one　of　the　typical　elements　of　Jacobean　drama．</dc:description>
