This is a report on English language programs in three Australian universities in 2004. Due to the relatively large number of students whose mother tongue is not English, Australian universities offer two types of English programs:one is mainly for Australian students whose mother tongue is not English and the other is for overseas students who hope to enter university. The English program for“non-English”Australian students provides a wide range of study skills which show that Australian universities are keen on keeping their educational standards at a reasonably high leve1. The program for overseas students is given at a language school affiliated with the university. It provides two different courses:one for English for academic purposes and the other for general English. These courses give the overseas students a chance to move up to university level upon successful completion.
